True North Homestead

Products We Don't Recommend

Not everything makes the cut. We test products on our own homestead, with our own family and animals. Here's what didn't work — and what we use instead.

Generic Flea & Tick Chemical Drops

Pet Care

Caused skin irritation, lethargy, and appetite loss in two of our dogs within 24 hours. The active ingredients (fipronil and permethrin) are neurotoxins — effective against fleas, but we weren't comfortable with the side effects on our animals.

What we use instead

We switched to natural grooming and dietary approaches (a strong immune system is the best flea defense). Regular oatmeal baths, apple cider vinegar rinses, and immune-supporting supplements have kept our pack flea-free for 3 years.

Conventional Air Fresheners & Plug-ins

Home

Synthetic fragrances contain phthalates and VOCs that are endocrine disruptors. After learning what's actually in these products, we removed every plug-in and spray from our home immediately. Headaches we'd normalized went away within a week.

What we use instead

Beeswax candles purify the air (they release negative ions that neutralize pollutants) and provide a warm, natural scent. We also use essential oil diffusers with pure oils.

Fluoride Toothpaste (Major Brand)

Personal Care

We're not anti-fluoride extremists, but we found that hydroxyapatite (the mineral your teeth are actually made of) remineralizes more effectively without the concerns around ingestion, especially for our kids.

What we use instead

Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is the standard in Japan (where cavity rates are lower than the US). It remineralizes enamel, reduces sensitivity, and is safe if accidentally swallowed.

Cheap Multivitamins (Centrum, One A Day)

Supplements

Most mass-market multivitamins use synthetic forms of nutrients (like folic acid instead of folate, cyanocobalamin instead of methylcobalamin) that many people can't absorb efficiently. They also contain fillers, artificial colors, and titanium dioxide.

What we use instead

Instead of a synthetic multivitamin, we use beef organ supplements — nature's original multivitamin. Liver alone contains more bioavailable nutrients than any pill on the market.

Miracle-Gro Synthetic Fertilizer

Garden

Synthetic fertilizers feed the plant directly but kill soil biology over time. After two seasons of Miracle-Gro, our soil was compacted and lifeless — it grew plants but the ecosystem was dead. No earthworms, no beneficial fungi, poor water retention.

What we use instead

Worm castings and rock dust feed the soil biology, which in turn feeds the plants. It takes slightly longer to see results, but the soil gets better every year instead of worse.

Conventional Dryer Sheets

Laundry

Dryer sheets coat your clothes in a thin layer of synthetic chemicals including quaternary ammonium compounds and artificial fragrance. These residues sit against your skin all day. When we tested our towels after switching away, the difference in absorbency alone was telling.

What we use instead

Wool dryer balls reduce static, soften clothes naturally, and cut drying time by 20-30%. They last for 1,000+ loads. Add essential oils if you want scent.

Chemical-Based Dog Dental Chews

Pet Care

Most dental chews are loaded with artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. Some contain BHA and BHT — suspected carcinogens. Our dogs also had digestive issues from the binding agents used to hold the chews together.

What we use instead

Raw bones, frozen carrots, and daily dental brushing with enzymatic pet toothpaste are safer, more effective alternatives. The mechanical action of chewing on appropriate items does more for dental health than any processed chew.

Amazon Basics Pet Supplements

Pet Supplements

Underdosed active ingredients, artificial flavors, and unclear sourcing. When we compared third-party lab results, the actual nutrient content was significantly lower than label claims. You get what you pay for with pet supplements.

What we use instead

We look for supplements with transparent sourcing, third-party testing, and active ingredient levels that match published research doses. The brands in our shop all meet this bar.
